Join a mission-driven team at American Farmland Trust as a senior leader shaping brand strategy, national paid media, and digital communications. This role is built for someone who enjoys connecting strategy to execution across websites, email, social, and outreach, with the flexibility of a remote work option from Washington, DC.
Compensation and benefits include a salary range of $120,000 to $130,000 based on experience, plus a comprehensive package: medical and prescription, dental, and vision coverage, company paid life insurance and long-term disability, voluntary life insurance, FSA (healthcare and dependent care), HSA, and a 401k plan. You will also have paid time off with sick leave (13 days per year), vacation leave (15 days in the first year, increasing to a maximum of 20 days), and twelve fixed holidays plus the week between Christmas and New Years off.
What you’ll do
- Design, create, and continually improve content for national dissemination.
- Maintain AFT’s brand by refining and enforcing brand standards and keeping communications current.
- Test brand health with key audiences and against competition.
- Lead supporter acquisition strategy and coordinate cross-department tactics to grow the database.
- Monitor the competitive environment, market changes, and political developments, then leverage trends to maximize communication impact.
- Foster internal and cross-divisional collaboration through informed guidance, coaching, and subject-matter expertise.
- Collaborate with other Directors and Deputy Directors to reduce silos and support effective execution of strategic initiatives.
- Identify, develop, and promote new programmatic and operational initiatives that improve effectiveness, efficiency, quality, and engagement, while encouraging innovation and continuous improvement.
- Lead execution of national communications strategy tailored to divisional priorities and capabilities.
- Ensure production of written and other materials that communicate divisional work to target audiences.
- Partner closely with the National Communications team to keep internal and external messaging consistent and aligned.
- Develop compelling messaging and storytelling across mediums, formats, and geographies.
- Establish new communications channels and grow effective channels to reach new audiences.
What you bring
- Advanced degree (MBA, marketing, communications, or a related field) preferred.
- 10+ years of progressively responsible national PR, communications, or marketing experience, or an equivalent combination of education and relevant professional experience.
- Proven expertise in marketing, communications, advertising, and media relations through portfolio examples and published samples.
- Strong communication and organization skills.
- Experience leading and managing teams, including direction-setting, staff development, and building collaboration.
- Advanced knowledge of social media trends, analytics, and planning tools across Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, YouTube, and Facebook.
- Experience managing email marketing, online fundraising, event registration, and digital advocacy platforms in a nonprofit or cause marketing context.
- Experience directing websites, including building new sites and updating webpages, creating workflows, and planning staff resources.
- Excellent project management skills, including establishing systems, identifying resources, and delivering on time.
- Knowledge and demonstrated experience using tools such as Canva, Adobe InDesign, Photoshop, and Illustrator (Canva required).
- Collaborative, strategic leadership that builds alignment and engagement through influence.
Schedule, location, and travel
- Full-time, Senior level role.
- Remote with connection to Washington, DC.
- Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to meet deadlines.
- Domestic travel estimated at approximately 4 to 5 trips per year, primarily for conferences, meetings, and organizational events.
