You will work closely with the SPA Director to shape messaging, coordinate events, create content, and report on program impact. Overview
Located within the Office of the Vice President for Research and Innovation, the role centers on advancing the STEM Pre-Academy through strategic communications, targeted outreach, and compelling content. You will help ensure accessibility and data integrity across channels while aligning all work with the SPA strategic plan.
Responsibilities
- Serve as the STEM Engagement and Communication Specialist for the University of Hawai i STEM Pre-Academy (SPA), collaborating with the Director to guide communication, marketing, and engagement plans that advance the program's mission and goals.
- Develop and implement a comprehensive strategic communications plan to reach SPA audiences, including PK-12 educators, university faculty and staff, community partners, and the general public, with clear goals and metrics.
- Create multimedia content such as newsletters, websites, videos, webinars, news releases, reports, outreach events, and social media, ensuring digital accessibility and accurate data across platforms.
- Lead the production of program reports, including data collection, aggregation, analysis, writing, formatting, editing, and distribution.
- Plan and coordinate events, including teacher professional development workshops, meetings, and outreach opportunities.
- Manage program branding, including audience research, brand strategy, visual identity, style guidelines, and publication templates.
- Identify resource needs for communication and marketing initiatives, researching cost-effective solutions and coordinating with the Director and central fiscal staff to follow UH procurement guidelines.
- Develop working knowledge of all aspects of the STEM Pre-Academy to support cross-functional projects and ensure alignment with the SPA strategic plan.
- Assist with the development and function of the STEM equipment lending library, emphasizing clear communication of its purpose and promoting its usage.
- Maintain professional knowledge through continuing education, certification courses, professional organizations, workshops, conferences, or other training.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- Education and Professional Work Experience: A baccalaureate degree in Business, Business Administration, Communications, Marketing, Advertising, Public Relations, Graphic Design, English, or related field and 3 years of professional experience with primary responsibilities in communications, marketing, and/or media production; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in communications, marketing, media production, and/or education.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Working knowledge of federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and systems related to communications, marketing, media production, and/or education.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to resolve complex problems in communications, marketing, media production, and/or education using creative reasoning to identify causes and implement effective solutions.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to interpret and present information clearly in writing, verbally, and visually for diverse audiences.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, teams, and individuals.
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Proficiency in operating a personal computer and using standard office productivity suites (Google Suite, Microsoft Office), shared tools (Google Calendar, Basecamp), design applications (Adobe Creative Cloud, Canva), and website builders/contents management systems (WordPress or similar).
- Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Demonstrated ability to plan and execute projects, organize workflows, and manage time across multiple concurrent initiatives.
- Supplemental Minimum Qualifications: Proven ability to plan and facilitate events such as workshops, outreach tabling, or meetings.
- Supplemental Minimum Qualifications: Availability to periodically work flexible hours, including evenings and weekends, to support teacher and program needs.
- Supplemental Minimum Qualifications: Ability to travel independently throughout the state, with occasional overnight or out-of-state travel.
