Job Description

The City of Norfolk seeks a Marketing and Social Media Coordinator to drive strategic communications across social channels, public relations, events, and stakeholder engagement to support economic development.

Responsibilities

  • Create and oversee cross platform social media plans and content to highlight city initiatives, events, and community engagement.
  • Track performance with analytics, refine content, and adjust strategies based on data insights.
  • Prepare and distribute press releases, newsletters, and media advisories for events such as ribbon cuttings, grand openings, and other economic development activities.
  • Support the planning and promotion of major public events, including grand openings and ribbon cuttings.
  • Represent the city at events, maintaining clear messaging and consistent branding.
  • Serve as a liaison among the department, the City Communications Department, local businesses, and community partners to ensure aligned messaging.
  • Collaborate with internal teams and external consultants to plan and execute departmental programs.
  • Assist the Communications Director with administrative tasks, including creating presentations, reports, and briefing materials.
  • Contribute to the development of communications and public relations policies and procedures.
  • Design and coordinate campaigns and multimedia projects that highlight goals and achievements.
  • Ensure all communications align with the city brand voice and identity.
  • Coordinate grant proposals and assist with budgeting processes related to communication projects.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated experience in social media content creation and management, public relations, and event planning.
  • Familiarity with current economic development initiatives and Norfolk city developments.
  • Strong writing and editing skills with a professional content portfolio.
  • Proficiency with social media platforms, content management systems, and analytics tools.
  • Excellent interpersonal and organizational abilities with the capacity to manage multiple projects.
  • Familiarity with basic graphic design programs.
  • Experience working in or alongside government or municipal organizations is preferred.
  • Minimum of three years in related communications, marketing, or public relations roles.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent education or professional experience.

Compensation

Salary: USD 56,900 to 95,328 per year
