Job Description

The Wean-to-Finish Marketing Specialist role at Iowa Select Farms operates onsite in Britt, Iowa, focused on identifying ideal market hogs by site and route, crafting marketing plans, and coordinating loads to maximize value while meeting system targets.

Responsibilities

  • Own the process of selecting ideal market hogs by site and entire route to align with system weight targets, while reducing weight variation, minimizing sort loss, and maximizing the share delivered to a primary packer. Propose adjustments to barn marketing strategies to meet targets.
  • Perform routine site visits to verify marketing previews, plans, top-weight hog identification, and loading accuracy in accordance with ISF protocols and expectations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve marketing and economic goals across the company and geographic area, including production performance, revenue, marketing, and cost-management KPIs.
  • Communicate cross-functionally on issues or concerns that require input from other areas of the business.
  • Forecast, select, and mark hogs for market.
  • Ensure site managers and load crews have the necessary supplies, tools, and facilities to load market hogs on schedule.
  • Collaborate with the transportation department to reschedule loads as needed to maximize average weights and meet targets for standard deviations and coefficient of variation on non-closeout loads.
  • Understand ideal market weights and adjust marketing dates through previews and physical weighing as needed.
  • Reduce sort loss premiums for individual pigs and loads while maintaining emphasis on achieving full-value market hogs for packing plants.
  • Develop and implement site-level marketing plans. Training includes technical production skills, site maintenance, and development of finish supervisors, independent contractors, and ISF direct employees.
  • Monitor overall pig health and coordinate with the Staff Veterinarian and Senior Finishing Supervisor on field conditions.
  • Promote and demonstrate safe animal handling practices.
  • Follow company guidelines for vehicle usage and transport supplies in a timely manner.
  • Work with supervisors to identify animals needing timely euthanasia and complete the euthanasia process per ISF protocols.
  • Assist leadership in strategy development and continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Maintain reliable attendance and be ready to commence work at the scheduled start time.
  • Perform all other duties as assigned by the supervisor.

Requirements

  • Prior experience in swine production operations is preferred.
  • Computer proficiency to run reports, perform data entry, use email, word processing, and spreadsheet software, and navigate ISF tools to locate important documents.
  • Computer knowledge: 2 years (Preferred)
  • Swine production operations: 3 years (Preferred)
  • Forecasting, selecting, and marking hogs for market: 2 years (Preferred)

Position Type / Expected Hours of Work

  • This is a full-time role requiring a minimum of 40 hours per week.
  • Day-shift hours are typically Monday through Friday.
  • Occasional evenings and weekend work may be required as job duties demand.
  • Additional availability may be needed during staffing challenges.

Supervisory Responsibilities

  • Indirect supervision of employees and contractors, with responsibilities in planning, assigning, and directing work in accordance with policy and law.
  • Collaborate with human resources to address employee concerns or complaints.
  • Manage disciplinary actions and terminations as needed and per company policy.
  • Recognize and reward performance through appropriate feedback and company programs.

Work Environment

Tasks may occur in outdoor conditions; environments can be loud. Exposure to fumes or airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, vibrations, and nuisance levels of gases and dust may occur, particularly in winter months.

Physicality Requirements

  • Required to stand, walk, sit, and use hands to handle objects or controls; reach with arms; climb stairs; balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and communicate verbally.
  • Ability to perform repetitive motions, including bending and lifting as tasks require.
  • Able to lift up to 75 pounds and climb ladders or navigate gates as needed.
  • Able to climb into livestock trailers with varying heights, including as short as 48 inches.

Education, Experience and Other Qualifications

  • Previous experience in swine production operations is desired.
  • Computer proficiency to run reports, data entry, email, Word, Excel, and to navigate ISF tools to locate important company documents.
