Job Description

The Wean-to-Finish Marketing Specialist role at Iowa Select Farms focuses on identifying ideal market hogs by site and route to meet system weight targets. The position designs and adjusts marketing strategies across barns and coordinates with transportation and site teams to support production and revenue objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct routine site visits to ensure marketing previews, marketing plans, identification of top weight hogs, and loading accuracy are performed according to ISF protocols and expectations.
  • Develop and implement strategies to achieve marketing and economic goals within the assigned geographic area, including production performance, revenue, marketing, and cost management KPIs.
  • Communicate cross-functionally on issues identified or concerns needing attention from other areas of the business.
  • Forecast, select, and mark hogs for market.
  • Ensure site managers and load crews have the supplies, tools, and facilities needed to load market hogs on schedule.
  • Collaborate with the transportation department to reschedule loads as necessary to maximize overall average weights while meeting target standard deviations and coefficients of variation for non-closeout loads.
  • Understand ideal market weights and adjust marketing dates through previews and weighing as needed.
  • Reduce sort loss premiums for individual pigs and loads while maintaining focus on maximizing the percentage of full-value market hogs delivered to packing plants.
  • Develop and implement site-specific marketing plans; provide training covering technical production skills, site maintenance, and development of finish supervisors, independent contractors, and ISF direct employees.
  • Monitor pig health and coordinate with the Staff Veterinarian and Senior Finishing Supervisor on field conditions.
  • Promote and demonstrate safe animal handling practices.
  • Follow company guidelines for vehicle usage and ensure timely pickup and delivery of supplies.
  • Work with supervisors to identify animals requiring timely euthanasia and complete the euthanasia process per ISF protocols.
  • Assist leadership in strategy development and continuous improvement.
  • Maintain regular attendance and readiness to work at scheduled times.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervision.

Purpose of Position

Own the process of identifying ideal market hogs by site and entire route to align with system weight targets. Reduce individual pig weight variation, minimize sort loss, and maximize the share of pigs delivered to the primary packer, while proposing and implementing marketing strategy adjustments by barn to meet targets.

Adhere to Iowa Select Farms bio-security policy at all times and report violations or concerns to management. Comply with safety policies and procedures, with ongoing education to maintain a safe work environment. Follow animal wellbeing policies and collaborate with the Production Well-being team promptly if incidents occur.

Supervisory Responsibilities

This role indirectly supervises employees and contractors and carries out supervisory duties per company policy. Responsibilities include planning, assigning, and directing work; coordinating with human resources on employee concerns; handling discipline and termination as needed; and recognizing performance with formal or informal rewards.

Work Environment

Some tasks may occur outdoors in varying weather. The work sites are typically loud, with exposure to fumes, airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, and vibrations. Winter months may bring nuisance levels of gases and dust.

Physicality Requirements

  • Stand, walk, sit, and use hands to handle objects or controls
  • Reach with arms, climb stairs, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl
  • Talk or hear; perform repetitive movements such as bending and lifting
  • Lift up to 75 pounds; climb in and out of livestock trailers up to 48 inches tall

Position Type and Expected Hours of Work

Full-time role requiring at least 40 hours per week. Day shift Monday through Friday, with occasional evenings and weekends as duties require. Additional availability may be needed during staffing challenges.

Travel

Regular travel is required, utilizing a company vehicle.

Education, Experience and Other Qualifications

Previous experience in swine production operations is preferred. Proficiency with computers to run reports, enter data, email, create documents, and use Excel; ability to navigate company tools and locate important documents.
