Director of Marketing and Communications
Job Description
Lead BACR’s marketing and communications function across internal alignment, brand visibility, and crisis readiness for the San Francisco Bay Area.
Responsibilities
- Develop and run an internal communication strategy that keeps staff informed, valued, and aligned with BACR’s mission, vision, and strategic goals.
- Create procedures, norms, and processes that support thoughtful, consistent flow of leadership updates, policies, and strategic decisions from the Executive Team and Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to all staff.
- Act as the primary Community Manager for the intranet platform Workvivo, using it to recognize achievements, reinforce culture, boost morale, and strengthen connection across all sites.
- Maintain a consistent look, feel, and tone across internal channels, newsletters, and announcements to ensure cohesive, professional brand identity.
- Build bridges between senior leadership and staff through opportunities for open dialogue, transparent updates, and two-way engagement (including All-Staff meetings, Q&As, and leadership messages).
- Partner with People & Culture, Finance, and Senior Leadership to develop inclusive messaging for organizational initiatives, policy updates, and official positions on topical or social issues.
- Drive initiatives aligned with Strategic Plan Goal 7: “Elevate our brand and external presence to increase our influence and impact.”
- Serve as a thought partner on BACR positioning, balancing elevating the core BACR brand versus supporting individual program identities (House of Brands vs. Branded House).
- Oversee updates to websites, social media accounts, annual reports, and organizational profiles (including GuideStar) to ensure brand consistency and engaging storytelling.
- Coordinate executive visibility, including preparation of the CEO and SLT for conference presentations, community events, key external appearances, and organization-wide announcements.
- Monitor current events and coordinate quick-turnaround responses; lead crisis communications strategy in partnership with leadership.
- Align communications strategy with fundraising goals and donor engagement by partnering with the CEO, Executive Directors, and Development and Government Relations teams.
Requirements
- 7+ years of progressive leadership experience in marketing, internal/external communications, public relations, or brand strategy (nonprofit or social impact sector preferred).
- Proven experience designing internal communication systems for large, geographically distributed teams.
- Strong ability to synthesize high-volume, multi-program operations into concise, persuasive narratives for executive audiences and major funders.
- Familiarity with brand architecture concepts (House of Brands vs. Branded House) and campaign execution.
- Demonstrated success aligning organizational storytelling with philanthropic trends, government grant priorities, and corporate social responsibility (CSR) initiatives.
