Fractional Director of Brand and Marketing
Job Description
Part-time fractional Director of Brand and Marketing to steer strategy and execution for cannabis brand marketing, build the in-house marketing function, and collaborate across the organization; roughly 15 hours per week, hybrid remote in South Deerfield, MA (Whately area).
Responsibilities
- Develop and execute the overall marketing strategy for the brand portfolio.
- Set marketing priorities aligned to company goals, resources, and potential impact.
- Craft annual and quarterly marketing plans that support growth objectives.
- Build scalable marketing systems, processes, calendars, and reporting practices.
- Advise executive leadership on brand positioning, market trends, consumer opportunities, and marketing investments.
- Manage the marketing budget and advise on resource allocation.
- Lead ongoing development of in-house products into differentiated consumer brands.
- Define and maintain brand positioning, messaging, voice, identity, and standards across the portfolio.
- Develop creative direction for campaigns, launches, packaging, and promotions.
- Identify opportunities for product extensions, portfolio growth, and new brands.
- Ensure consistency across packaging, merchandising, marketing materials, and customer experiences.
- Serve as primary marketing liaison for partner brands, coordinating with their teams in Massachusetts.
- Prioritize and oversee initiatives across wholesale, digital, retail, field marketing, and events.
- Develop go-to-market strategies for new products and launches.
- Direct development of packaging, retail displays, POS materials, apparel, promos, launch kits, and sales collateral.
- Collaborate with internal designers, production teams, vendors, agencies, photographers, and other partners.
- Provide clear direction, timelines, and accountability for marketing projects.
- Ensure compliance with cannabis advertising and marketing requirements.
- Partner with Sales to support customer acquisition, retailer relationships, launches, and field execution.
- Develop trade marketing programs to strengthen retailer engagement and sell-through.
- Create marketing tools and materials that enable the Sales team to represent the portfolio effectively.
- Support retailer education, product knowledge, and brand advocacy.
- Use sales performance and customer feedback to refine marketing priorities.
- Oversee digital marketing efforts across social, email, website, SMS, and emergent channels.
- Design campaigns to raise awareness, engagement, retention, and loyalty.
- Guide field marketing, brand ambassador programs, events, trade shows, and activations.
- Build consistent consumer experiences across digital, retail, events, and promotional materials.
- Foster authentic consumer communities around the portfolio.
- Establish practical marketing metrics and reporting systems.
- Analyze campaign performance, sales trends, consumer insights, and competitive activity.
- Measure marketing ROI and present performance updates and strategic recommendations to leadership.
- Continuously refine priorities based on results and business needs.
- Assess long-term staffing and resource needs for the marketing function.
- Recommend internal versus outsourced work and identify needs for new hires.
- Define and recruit future marketing roles as the department scales.
- Build processes to support a growing internal marketing team.
- Prepare the marketing function to scale with brand and revenue growth.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Business, Communications, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
- Minimum three years leading brand or marketing initiatives in the cannabis industry.
- Proven track record of building and growing consumer brands.
- Experience turning marketing strategies into effective execution.
- Experience leading cross-functional initiatives and managing internal and external resources.
- Strong analytical, communication, organizational, and project management skills.
- Ability to prioritize high-impact work within a roughly 15-hour-per-week schedule.
- Ability to work independently while maintaining close communication with executive leadership and partners.
