Head of Marketing, Retina Eyecare
Job Description
Lead the U.S. Retina Eyecare marketing organization, own portfolio strategy, and drive measurable performance across in-line and launch products.
Key responsibilities
- Lead the U.S. Retina Marketing team in Eye Care, accountable for vision, strategy, execution, and performance across both in-line and launch products.
- Set portfolio and brand priorities; convert customer, market, and competitive insights into differentiated strategies.
- Ensure disciplined investment and execution across the product life cycle.
- Lead and develop the Retina Marketing team; coordinate cross-functional partners to deliver business objectives and drive impact for patients.
- Apply a P&L ownership mindset and a One AbbVie perspective in decision-making.
- Own overarching Retina Marketing strategy across in-line and pipeline assets, aligning to enterprise priorities, customer needs, market dynamics, and asset life-cycle considerations.
- Own marketing inputs to the Retina business plan, including forecast assumptions, operating budgets, resource allocation, performance objectives, and investment trade-offs.
- Direct development, execution, measurement, and optimization of integrated marketing plans; establish performance indicators; identify risks and opportunities; maintain accountability for timely, high-quality delivery and business results.
- Lead, coach, and develop direct and indirect team members; set priorities, roles, and decision rights; build a high-performing culture grounded in trust, accountability, agility, collaboration, and enterprise leadership.
- Lead commercial strategy and readiness for launch products, including go-to-market planning, positioning, customer and site-of-care readiness, distribution, and access considerations; optimize continued performance of established brands.
- Maintain deep understanding of retina specialists, patients, practices, sites of care, healthcare decision makers, and competitive dynamics.
- Act as the senior Marketing representative for Retina, aligning Sales, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance, Finance, Operations, Trade, Supply Chain, Patient Services, Analytics, R&D, and Global around shared priorities, resourcing, decisions, and execution.
- Oversee agency and vendor partnerships and determine appropriate engagement with external collaborators, professional societies, and advocacy organizations.
- Provide clear recommendations, updates, and decision frameworks to broader AbbVie leadership; influence and communicate across the organizational matrix.
- Ensure strategies and activities comply with AbbVie policies and applicable legal, regulatory, medical, and industry requirements.
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree required; MBA or other advanced degree preferred.
- Minimum 10 years of Marketing experience.
- Extensive progressive pharmaceutical, biotechnology, or specialty-care commercial experience, including significant leadership in marketing and brand strategy.
- Proven success leading a franchise, portfolio, or major brand across multiple life-cycle stages, including launch planning and in-market growth.
- Strong people-leadership experience, with a record of building high-performing teams, developing talent, and leading through change in a matrixed organization.
- Deep expertise across the marketing capability framework: insights, segmentation, positioning, value proposition, customer experience, creative development, omnichannel execution, and investment optimization.
- Strong financial and analytical acumen: forecasting, operating-budget management, resource allocation, performance measurement, and P&L-oriented decision making.
- Ability to lead and influence senior cross-functional stakeholders across Sales, Market Access, Medical Affairs, Regulatory, Legal, Compliance, Finance, Operations, R&D, and Global teams.
- Excellent executive communication and strategic problem-solving, judgment, and decision-making; ability to translate complexity into clear direction and action.
- Preferred experience in ophthalmology, retina, buy-and-bill, specialty biologics, site-of-care markets, or physician-administered therapies.
- Ability to travel as required, approx. 35%.
Compensation and location
- Location: Irvine, CA (onsite)
- Salary: USD 182,000 - 346,000 per year
