Marketing Content Engineer
Job Description
Unum Group seeks a Marketing Content Engineer to design and optimize scalable content solutions for multi-channel marketing in Portland, ME (onsite) with a salary range of USD 63,500 to 120,000 per year.
Responsibilities
- Define content models and copy standards to ensure deliverables are strategic, distinctive, and stand out in the marketplace
- Architect and engineer content experiences across digital channels, aligned with brand strategy and audience needs
- Create modular, reusable content components and structure content for personalization and omnichannel delivery
- Collaborate with CX priority teams to co-develop program big ideas and support agile ceremonies (standups, sprint reviews)
- Leverage AI writing tools (Copilot, Writer.com) to generate, refine, and optimize content across formats and platforms
- Own high-level messaging for each program ensuring all marketing mix elements adhere to the strategy and bring it to life
- Design and maintain content taxonomies, tagging systems, and personalization rules for delivery
- Partner with Creative Lead to develop style guidelines including tone and manner for all media
- Build reusable content components and templates aligned with audience needs, SEO/GEO best practices, and platform capabilities
- Write high-priority communications
- Determine optimal content placement across channels (web, email, social, portals) based on audience behavior and consumption patterns
- Present creative concepts to Senior Leadership/Strategy Review Board
- Provide guidance and support to Production & Delivery team Copywriters
- Work closely with Process Facilitation Managers to brief teams and ensure alignment
- Coordinate with external agencies and internal teams for consistent strategy and execution
- Participate in retrospectives and contribute to process optimization
- Apply information architecture and user experience principles to structure content for intuitive navigation and consumption
- Design content models and workflows that support efficient management, retrieval, and personalization across digital platforms
- Collaborate with UX and development teams to ensure content solutions are user-centered and technically robust
- May perform other duties as assigned
Requirements
- Degree in Marketing, Communications, or related field
- 6+ years of full-time professional communications experience; agency experience a plus
- Strong analytical skills and ability to translate business requirements into content architecture
- Superior writing, editing, and creative skills in both traditional and digital media
- Experience with content management and automation tools (Headless CMS)
- Analytics platforms for performance tracking
- Understanding of content modeling and structured authoring (DITA, Markdown)
- Experience with AI writing tools (Copilot, Writer.com) and content automation platforms
- Knowledge of APIs, HTML/XML, and basic scripting
- Thrives in a fast-paced, collaborative environment and quickly translates strategic direction into actionable, creative solutions
- Demonstrated ability to edit, coach, and develop other newer Content Engineers
- Passion for idea development and creativity
- Works well independently as well as in a cross-functional team environment
- High level of initiative and ownership
- Reliable knowledge of AP style
- Demonstrated ability to model, organize, and deliver content for digital platforms, applying best practices from information science and user experience
- Experience working with cross-functional teams to optimize content for usability, accessibility, and engagement
- Familiarity with content management systems, metadata, taxonomy, and digital asset organization
- Drives a shift toward scalable content creation: create once, reuse everywhere
