Director of Marketing and Communications
Job Description
Mississippi Children’s Museum in Meridian, MS is seeking a Director of Marketing and Communications to coordinate and facilitate end-to-end marketing and public relations activities for MCM-M. In this onsite role, you will lead integrated marketing and communications efforts that support awareness, attendance, and community connection, reporting directly to the Executive Director.
You will oversee the museum’s messaging and digital presence while working closely with museum leadership, department heads, and statewide marketing partners to promote exhibits, programs, events, educational initiatives, and visitor experiences.
What you’ll do
- Collaborate with museum leadership and department heads to develop and execute integrated marketing and communications strategies aligned with MCM-M’s mission and brand.
- Direct and oversee marketing, communications, digital media, website, advertising, and public relations activities for Mississippi Children’s Museum – Meridian.
- Build and implement strategic marketing and communications plans to increase awareness, visitation, membership, earned revenue, community engagement, and philanthropic support.
- Oversee the museum’s digital presence, including website, social media, email marketing, and other digital communication platforms, ensuring content stays current and aligned with organizational goals.
- Cultivate relationships with media outlets, community partners, tourism organizations, and other stakeholders to support strong public awareness and positive coverage.
- Develop, manage, and monitor the Marketing Department budget, advertising expenditures, and vendor relationships.
- Support donor-focused materials by developing or revising copy in coordination with the MCM Marketing Department in Jackson, including items such as sponsorship proposals, fundraising appeals, and the annual report.
- Serve in a leadership role for strategic planning goals connected to MCM-Meridian and coordinate with the MCM statewide marketing department on projects.
- Manage museum promotions on social platforms with emphasis on Facebook, X, Instagram, LinkedIn, and TikTok for MCM-M.
- Create and update visual and written content for the website, social media, e-blasts, newsletters, and promotional materials using Canva and Adobe Creative Suite.
- Manage and respond to public feedback on social media, Google, and other applicable outlets with appropriate timing.
- Plan and manage e-blast content for general museum needs and for educators, partners, members, volunteers, and others as needed.
- Set goals for social media platform growth, track and analyze ROI across platforms, and oversee ROI and Sell Sheet package creation for sponsored events.
- Digitally capture museum events as needed, including some Saturdays throughout the year.
- Coordinate MCM-M’s Lights, Camera, Imagination families and plan, source, and oversee promotional items including branded swag and printed materials.
- Manage website updates, including pages and landing pages for programs and other digital content, while ensuring branding and messaging consistency.
- Manage promotion of major museum events on MCM’s website and monitor content alignment with internal marketing team guidance.
- Update the website with media information such as press releases and media kits; manage the website events calendar with other departments.
- Lead development and implementation of advertising promotions, including managing local and out-of-market advertising budgets.
- Maintain a current list of media outlets and rate-cards for local and out-of-market advertising opportunities.
- Serve as point-of-contact for account executives and manage public relations strategies, including press conferences, media advisories, calendar announcements, and both digital and printed communications.
- Pursue radio and television community shows, submit and update event listings with local newspapers and publications, and maintain a comprehensive media and community partner list for communications.
- Obtain optimum media coverage, manage media interactions at museum events, and oversee media relations at those events.
- Be able to work 40 hours per week, with occasional evening and weekend work for mission-related events.
Required qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, or a related field.
- Three years of field-related experience.
- Proficiency in graphic design software and content management systems, including Adobe, Canva, and Hootsuite.
- Advanced skills with Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
- Skills in photography and videography.
- Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated ability to be organized and motivated, initiating and following through on projects independently.
- High comfort level working with children and a diverse public.
Preferred
- Experience with WordPress or similar platforms.
- Experience with Constant Contact or similar tools.

USD 40,000 - 45,000 per year
